The Scenography of Mass and the Reinterpretation of Steel

The Park1538 Gwangyang project presents a scenographic experience based on the contrast between industrial solidity and sensory fluidity; where curved steel formations redefine the perception of steel beyond its traditional association with heaviness and industrial production. From the moment of arrival, spatial perception is shaped through flowing surfaces that interact with changes in natural light, causing reflections and shadows to shift throughout the day and granting the building a continuously transforming visual presence. In this way, steel is transformed from a mere structural envelope into a visual medium that connects the industrial legacy of the POSCO steelworks with the surrounding natural landscape represented by the Seomjin River and Baegunsan Mountain.

Spatial Experience and Site Reinterpretation

Movement within the project evolves through a sequence of overlapping and multi-layered spaces that guide visitors along a gradual journey combining discovery and sensory engagement. Rather than separating industrial history from the surrounding nature, the design integrates these elements into a unified spatial experience; where architectural curves interact with light and air to create an open environment that responds to user movement. Therefore, space is not experienced merely as a visual path, but as a sensory experience that recalls the memory of steel production and transforms the former industrial site into a cultural space for gathering, learning, and interaction.

As visitors move through the spaces, the curved steel ribs become an organizing element of the interior scene, defining the rhythm of façades and circulation paths while providing the building with a continuous visual language. These elements also contribute to structuring the relationship between structure and movement, guiding visitor transitions and creating open spaces that interact with changing patterns of light and shadow, enhancing the sense of continuity and fluidity throughout the project.

The movement path inside the building is formed through a precise engineering system that coordinates the curvature, spacing, and inclination angles of the steel elements, achieving integration between structural performance and the visual composition of the interior spaces. As visitors move between ramps, vertical connections, and the main staircase, circulation transforms from a functional element into an essential component of the scenographic experience; guiding users through sequential views and framed perspectives that gradually open toward the city, industrial landscape, river, and surrounding mountains. The scenographic experience of the project is completed through the treatment of the external landscape, where the industrial terrain is reorganized into green configurations that merge with elements connected to the site’s history. This relationship between the renewed topography and industrial remnants provides visitors with a transitional experience that evokes the transformation from a closed production environment into a vibrant public space. The industrial elements preserved within the site are transformed from mere physical remains into memory points that guide movement and add a historical layer to the open experience, interacting with light, air, and the surrounding natural landscape.

Material Balance and Programmatic Integration

The project consists of an exhibition hall containing one basement level and four above-ground floors, alongside an educational center with one basement level and three upper floors. The structural system combines a steel frame with reinforced concrete to achieve a balance between architectural expression and functional efficiency. Through the relationship between curved steel elements, circulation organization, and the gradual progression of spaces, the architectural volumes integrate with the landscape design to establish a material connection between industrial memory and the natural environment. Thus, the project reintroduces Gwangyang’s industrial identity through a more open cultural interpretation, where material, human experience, and place become part of a unified spatial narrative.
